Army marksman holds on to first as defending champ pulls into second at NRA High Power Championship
Port Clinton, Ohio - Following a tough day on the range that was was split by a rain delay mid-afternoon, SSG Shane Barnhart of the USAMU held his point lead and remains atop the scoreboard half-way through the 2014 High Power Championship.
Now sporting a 1193-64x out of a possible 1200 points, Barnhart shot a 595-28x during today's Navy Cup, Coast Guard Trophy, and Army Cup matches. Barnhart's lead is three points over second place, which now belongs to USAMU teammate and defending High Power national champion SSG Brandon Keith Green and his score of 1190-58x.
Senior shooter Kenneth Lankford currently has the second highest score at 1191-54x, but his use of optics places him in the Anysight Match Or Tactical Rifle category, making him eligible to only compete against other anysight shooters.
In third is now three-time High Power champion Norman Houle, who holds a two x lead over fourth place's Stephen Culpepper at 1189-55x. Sitting at fifth is Joseph Hendricks with an 1189-50x, only four points out of the lead.
The highest service rifle shooter at this half-way point is also the High Woman. MSG Julia Carlson, USMCR is in the lead for the Service Rifle Championship at 1183-58x, five points above second place Army shooter SPC Lee Bahten's 1178-45x.
Now that today's matches are over the shooters have retired to their huts, barracks, or back into Port Clinton to recuperate and get ready to do today all over again - twice. We're still just half way to the final scores, which will sit in the upper 2300s. Leads could vanish as easily as someone could lock in and run away with the lead. We'll have an easier picture of the outcome after tomorrow's matches, but it will still be a little hazy until the final shot is taken on Tuesday afternoon.
